This afternoon, someone I have never met but only spoken to asked me, over the phone, if I had children. It was a jarring question and a bizarre assumption to make. If she had actually met me, she probably would have never asked. Is there a point one reaches in which a voice is maternal in tone? A child-bearing voice is quite an interesting sound to imagine. On the rare occasion that I happen to hear a recording of myself, I am always surprised at how young I sound. Still, it must not be enough. I have resolved to sound younger, and I apologize in advance for the high pitch.
